Google confirms that Nest doorbells and cameras won't charge in freezing temperatures February 21, 2022by Martin 6 If you've noticed that your Nest Doorbell is taking a long time to charge or won't charge at all during the harsh winter months, you're not alone. It seems that the new battery with the Nest Doorbell and Nest Cam will not work properly in freezing temperatures. Google is aware of this flaw in Nest products and has provided more details about the issue. On the new Nest support page (via 9to5Google ), Google reveals that at lower temperatures, the battery of your Nest Doorbell or camera will not charge. Both products have the following minimum temperature requirements: Minimum Operating Temperature: -4°F (-20°C) Minimum Charging Temperature: 32°F (0°C) As Google explains, when the temperature drops below 32°F (0°C), the battery inside the Nest/Cam will stop charging: “At temperatures between -4°F (-20°C) and 32°F (0°C), the battery can still power your device, but it will not charge. It may also drain faster than usual.
At temperatures as low as -4°F (-20°C), your battery may C Level Executive List have less than half its useful life in hot weather.” Those who connected the Nest Doorbell to their existing doorbell wiring will also experience the same problem. That's because the wires don't directly power the Nest Doorbell; instead, they charge the battery quickly. So, when the temperature reaches -4°F (-20°C), the battery stops charging, eventually causing the device to shut down when the battery is discharged. Fortunately, if you have your Nest Cam connected to your home, it will continue to work in sub-freezing temperatures. At temperatures below freezing, the battery will not charge, but as long as a power cord source is available, the camera can operate in temperatures down to -4°F (-20°C). If the battery is low or won't charge, Google says you should bring the device indoors to warm it up.
When the battery is cold, Nest owners will see a "Charging Suspended" or "Slow Charging" message in the Google Home app. Google has previously confirmed that it will be included in a 2nd Generation Nest Doorbell model that will go on sale sometime in 2022.
